Abstract
One of the supporters of the success of education in Indonesia is students who have broad insight and knowledge. This can be realized when students have a high interest in reading. Billy Antono argues that reading as one of the activities in literacy activities is the key to the progress of education, the success of an education is not measured by the number of children who get high marks but the number of children who like to read in the classroom. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. The method used in collecting research data is observation, interviews and documentation. The purpose of this study was to determine the literacy activities of students, the inhibiting factors of student literacy activities and the efforts made by the school in increasing student interest in reading at SMP Muhammadiyah 04 Medan. From the results of the research conducted, it is known that the literacy program at SMP Muhammadiyah 04 Medan has existed since 2019 with activities including; reading short verses, reading 15 minutes, repeating old lessons before starting a new lesson, visiting the school library and reading in the school environment or yard. The school's efforts in increasing student interest in reading at SMP Muhammadiyah 04 Medan include; motivate students, ask students to do homework and create a reading corner.
